Grantmaking Guidelines

In 2017 , the W. Clement & Jessie V. Stone Foundation will have an asset base of over $106 million and will disburse approximately $6 million in grants. The areas of interest for the Foundation are education, with an emphasis on teacher development and principal leadership; early childhood education, and youth development. The Foundation concentrates its giving in Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston.

The Foundation’s Grantmaking Process
The Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals. Ordinarily, Foundation staff contacts nonprofit organizations of interest for a preliminary conversation about their work and how a grantmaking partnership with the Stone Foundation might help to advance it. We then present the work to a program committee of our Board for consideration. If the committee expresses a strong interest in the work, we contact the organization and work with them on a proposal submission process. The Board of Trustees reviews these proposals and has the final decision regarding which organizations the Foundation will fund.
